COURSE DESCRIPTION
This class introduces students to the fundamentals of Haida formline design with a focus on structure, rhythm, and visual balance. Participants will study and practice the primary design elements — ovoids, U-forms, and S-forms — and how these shapes interact to create cohesive compositions.

The course emphasizes basic crest designs traditionally seen on bentwood boxes, paddles, and regalia, explored through drawing exercises and design studies. Students will learn how formline proportions and flow contribute to the overall aesthetic of Haida art.

By the end of the class, participants will have developed a series of formline sketches that demonstrate their understanding of composition, symmetry, and movement within the Haida visual system.
