Accomplished Haida weaver and regalia maker Debbie McLavey teaches Northwest Coast art and culture to learners of all ages through KIC’s Tribal Scholars, apprenticeships, dance groups, classes and workshops. Students in this class will learn to create a pair of custom leather high-top moccasins that can be personalized in a variety of ways using beadwork, weaving, buttons, wool, or fur. This class counts toward a Certificate of Merit in Regalia.

Registration for Spring classes opens in December 2022. You are welcome to register via phone (907.225.5900), email, or stop by the Totem Heritage Center.

Cedar Basket Weaving

A cedar basket weaving class is offered through the Sealaska Heritage Institute, in partnership with the Organized Village of Saxman.
DEADLINE TO APPLY: March 6 at 3:00 PM.

Introduction to a better understanding of the importance of traditional woven baskets and other woven objects within the local Native cultures. Beginner and intermediate instruction in the making of a cedar basket.

LEARNING OUTCOMES
Upon successful completion of this course, students will be able to:
• Weave prepared cedar materials.
• Learn the weaving terminology associated with weaving.
• All students will two-way twine a basket and show progressive improvement in the preparation and techniques of weaving with cedar.
• In the making of a basket, students will implement two border stitches used at the transition area and at the end of the basket.

INSTRUCTOR
Deborah Head, or Aanutein, is a lifelong resident of Craig, Alaska. She is the niece of Klawock Elder Dr. Bill Demmert, Jr., and Native culture has always been at the center of her family’s life. The winner of a 2011 Rasmuson Fellowship Award and a Smithsonian institution Visiting Artist participant, Aanutein is a highly regarded cedar bark weaver with award-winning pieces represented in museum collections as well as in private and cultural ownership.

Class capacity: 12 participants

Registration Fee: $200 Payable directly to SHI, This includes the $150 supply fee. Scholarships are available through the Organized Village of Saxman.

For this workshop, SHI provides prepared cedar for each participant as well as basic supplies to create a basket.

Previous experience is not necessary to apply.

**Preference will go to persons who are members of the Organized Village of Saxman.

**Space is limited, there are only 12 spots for this class. To confirm your spot, you must complete the application and pay the fee.

***Please note, a completed application and payment will not secure your space in this class. A selection process will be completed upon reaching the application deadline date. Students will be accepted and prioritized in the order their application is received and by the following items:

1. Have successfully completed the application
2. Meet eligibility requirements
3. Have not participated in a basketry course before

The Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council are so excited to be partnering with Ketchikan After School Program (KAP) and ARTery Instructor Abel Piercy to bring you the Youth Wearable Art Class!!!!
When:
Tuesdays and Thursdays 3:30 - 5:30 pm
February 7th - March 16th
That is 12, 2 hour classes, with art teacher Abel Piercy!!!
Where:
KAP room, upstairs at the PLAZA Mall
Why:
To give youth artists an opportunity and a space to create amazing art to be worn on the body!!!!

Students can choose to participate in the 2nd ANnual Youth Wearable Art Show with their finished pieces March 25th!!!

Open Craft Night at the Totem Heritage Center

Join them on Tuesdays from 6-9:00pm and bring your weaving, regalia, and design projects to work in the company of fellow Northwest Coast artists and students.

Arts Report on KRBD

Each week at approximately 8:20 am KRBD hosts the Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council for their weekly report on arts and humanities in Ketchikan and the surrounding area. Get a synopsis of the local music scene, performances, Gallery exhibits, pop-ups, and Calls to artists. The Arts Report often features special guests from the Ketchikan Theatre Ballet, Artists, and Curators. Tune in weekly to KRBD 105.3 FM Ketchikan, Metlakatla and Saxman, 107.1 FM North Ketchikan, Ward Cove, and Ketchikan, 101.7: Craig, 90.7: North Point Higgins, 90.1: Mountain Point, Hydaburg, Klawock, and Thorne Bay.

This open-level Ballet class is geared toward adults with no previous dance experience.

Move your body, burn calories and learn the basics of Classical Ballet technique! There is no dance or ballet experience necessary for this class. This class is designed for adults who are new to dance and have always wanted to experience the beauty of ballet! Punch cards are also available for this class.
