Alaska Contemporary Art Bank 2023: Call for Art

Tuesday, February 28, 2023

The Alaska State Council on the Arts is requesting applications of visual artwork to purchase from Alaskan artists for the Alaska Contemporary Art Bank. Alaskan artists are invited to submit up to 6 recent works in any media. Purchased works become part of a lending collection displayed throughout state public areas. All entries must be submitted through https://artist.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php....
Only works priced at and under $4,000 will be considered.
All Alaskan artists are encouraged to apply.
Deadline for applications is 9:59 PM AKDT, February 28, 2023.
The Alaska Contemporary Art Bank was founded in 1975 by the Alaska State Council on the Arts (ASCA) and was created with two primary goals: to expose more Alaskans to high quality work by contemporary Alaskan artists through the loaning of original art to public offices throughout Alaska, and to provide support to artists in Alaska through purchase of their work. The collection has grown to more than 700 art works in a wide variety of media, styles, and subject matter. Although the art is the same as that collected by museums, the purpose of the Art Bank is to provide a circulating collection of Alaskan artworks to exhibit in public areas other than museums.
Works submitted to the 2023 Call for Art will be selected for purchase by ASCA’s Visual Arts Advisory Committee (VAAC). VAAC is a statewide group of artists and arts administrators who meet periodically to advise ASCA in policy and art acquisition. Selected artworks are then recommended to and approved for purchase by ASCA’s board of trustees. Artwork is purchased directly from the artist, not an intermediary entity such as a gallery or agent. Under state regulations, VAAC and ASCA board members are not eligible to apply for Art Bank acquisitions.
Alaska Contemporary Art Bank artworks are loaned out for display in public areas owned and operated by the state of Alaska, University of Alaska departments, the State Legislature and in offices of Alaskan members of U. S. Congress. Artwork must be durable and appropriate for public areas. ASCA provides labels that identify the artist and artwork title to accompany the pieces.
For more information visit https://arts.alaska.gov/artbank. Questions? Contact Jade Aldridge at jade.aldridge@alaska.gov or (907) 269-6607.

ONLINE: The Art of Time: Documenting History through Native Art

Tuesday, February 28, 2023
7:00 pm8:00 pm

"Hanging out with my friends in quarantine" by Alison Bremner (Tlingit) 2020.

Event Description
How have Native cultures documented the passage of time? And what can we learn from Native art forms about preserving moments that are important to us?

Join Miranda Belarde-Lewis (Zuni/Tlingit), assistant professor at the University of Washington’s Information School, for an exploration of the artful documentation of time, as seen through familiar and less familiar artistic traditions within Native communities.

The documentation of time and major events is not a new phenomenon for Native communities, who have logged cataclysmic changes for thousands of years. Temporal documentation includes winter counts from the Plains, totem and story poles from the Northwest coast, and pottery from the Southwest. In addition to these pre-contact forms, the talk will include current examples of Native art documenting social, political, and environmental concerns such as missing and murdered Indigenous women, the impact of commercial fishing, and pipeline protests.

Dr. Miranda Belarde-Lewis (Zuni/Tlingit) is an assistant professor and the inaugural Jill and Joe McKinstry Endowed Faculty Fellow of Native North American Indigenous Knowledge at the University of Washington’s Information School. She is also an independent curator who engages public scholarship by working with tribal, state, federal, and international institutions and organizations to promote Native artists and their work. Recent exhibitions include Sho Sho Esquiro: Doctrine of Discovery (2021) at the Bill Reid Gallery in Vancouver, B.C., Preston Singletary: Raven and the Box of Daylight (2018) at the Museum of Glass; Alison Bremner (Marks): One Gray Hair (2017) and Storme Webber | Casino: A Palimpsest (2017) at the Frye Museum in Seattle. Belarde-Lewis holds a B.A. in cultural anthropology from the University of Arizona, an M.A. in museology and a Ph.D. in information science from the University of Washington.

2023 Voices of the Wilderness Artist Residency

Wednesday, March 1, 2023Thursday, March 2, 2023

They are excited to announce that the 2023 Voices of the Wilderness artist residency application period is now open. This year, there are eleven different opportunities being hosted through the US Forest Service, National Park Service, and US Fish & Wildlife Service across Alaska.

This unique artist-in-residence program pairs wilderness specialists with a volunteer artist, to be actively engaged in stewardship projects such as research, monitoring, and education, all while residing in a backcountry setting. In exchange for this opportunity, artists donate a work of art and provide a community public extension, such as a slideshow lecture or workshop.

While the deadline to apply is March 1, 2023, they encourage all artists to submit their application early for careful consideration. It’s free to apply, and the program is open to artists of all mediums. Attached is the information and application; more about the program can be found at http://www.fs.usda.gov/goto/votw

Helen Walker Preforming Arts Grant Submission Deadline

Wednesday, March 1, 2023
9:00 am10:00 am

The Helen Walker Grant Category has modified its eligible projects to make them compatible with the restrictions placed on the performing arts due to the pandemic. Please read the guidelines and grant information on the online grant system thoroughly, before applying.
Quarterly Grant Deadlines: June 1, September 1, December 1, March 1

The Helen Walker Performing Arts Fund Grant is named for Helen A. Walker, a major arts advocate in the state until her death in 1996. Ms. Walker was a recipient of the Governor's Award for the Arts in 1984, a founder of the Fairbanks Arts Association and the Sitka Summer Music Festival, as well as Arts Alaska. She served as a board member for numerous cultural groups, including the Alaska Repertory Theater, the Fairbanks Library Foundation, the University of Alaska's KUAC Advisory Board, and Fairbanks Commissions for Urban Beautification, Parks and Recreation, and the Library.

Arts Alaska provided professional management services for the state's performing arts tours and other programs from 1975 to 1988. Since that time, the Arts Alaska Endowment Fund awarded over $100,000 to qualifying sponsors/presenters for performing arts projects in small Alaskan communities.

In 2006, the Arts Alaska Board of Directors voted to dissolve the organization and invest the funds through the Alaska Arts and Culture Foundation. Each year, interest from this fund will provide grants to support the performing arts in Alaska.
