"Portable Southeast" a traveling exhibit at The Commons Gallery Opens

Friday, January 13, 2023
6:00 am6:00 pm

ABOUT PORTABLE SOUTHEAST: Portable Southeast is an exhibit inspired by life in coastal Southeast Alaska. Featuring 25 works of art from artists across Southeast Alaska, the exhibit builds virtual bridges between communities - offering new opportunities for artists to showcase their work, and bringing art to non-traditional spaces. The Call for Art was open to all Southeast Alaska residents, and five curators from across the region reviewed submissions and accepted pieces into the final show. The twenty-five pieces exhibited will travel to six communities to be displayed including: Ketchikan (January); Petersburg (February); Sitka (March); Haines (April); Yakutat (May); and Juneau (June).

ABOUT THE ARTISTS & CURATORS: The inaugural Portable Southeast show was curated by a diverse group of community leaders and artists: arts administrator Cindi Lagoudakis of the Clausen Memorial Museum in Petersburg; visual artist Evon Zerbetz of Ketchikan; visual artist Krista Perala of Sitka; visual artist Donna Catotti of Haines; and arts administrator Cory Woodall of the Juneau City Museum in Juneau.

The artists of the 2023 inaugural exhibit include (in no particular order): Abigail Saiz (Juneau); Amanda Neyenhouse (Douglas); Anne Doyle (Sitka); Christine Kleinhenz (Juneau); Ellie Sharman (Gustavus); Hollis Kitchin (Juneau); Kathryn Rousso (Ketchikan); Katie Ione Craney (Haines); Kelsey Hoke Martin (Juneau); Kerry Kirkpatrick (Juneau); Krystal Thomas (Ketchikan); Lanie McCarry (Douglas); Liyuan Zhang (Juneau); Mandy Ramsey (Haines); Mary Saiz (Sitka); Mimi Kotlarov (Ketchikan); Naona “Peaches” Wallin (Ketchikan); Pam Joy (Skagway); Rebecca Hsieh (Juneau); and Suzanne Fuqua (Petersburg).

ABOUT THE EXHIBIT: The Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council and the Tongass Federal Credit Union welcome Portable Southeast to Ketchikan at The Commons Gallery from January 13 – 27th, 2023. This exhibit is generously supported by Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council and the Tongass Federal Credit Union

This project is made possible with support from the Alaska State Council on the Arts and the National Endowment for the Arts. Portable Southeast is managed by the Juneau Arts & Humanities Council (JAHC).
