Torch Nights Performing Arts Series

The Ketchikan Area Arts and Humanities Council is thrilled to announce the line-up of this year’s Torch Nights Performing Arts Series, packed with world-class entertainment sure to fill the long dark winter with some bright stars!

This year’s Season includes not only world class performances but also 4 special dance events!  Our Season opens with one of the special dances by the Homer based Cajun band – Ray-Jen Cajun.  This high energy, all Alaskan band will be teaching Cajun dancing at the new Arts Council building to build up to their performance on September 12th. (Stay tuned for dance class and times and additional info.)

Our next performance, September 26th is Maya Soleil, an electric ensemble presenting high-energy original music ranging from the Highlife, Afro-beat, and other dance music styles of western and southern Africa to funky jazz. Costumed vocalists and dancers perform in several African languages and English, with colorful dances and song.

In October the Arts Council is thrilled to present blues singer and songwriter AND Grammy Award Winner Alvin Youngblood Hart.  He is a dynamic musician who has played with Taj Mahal, Bo Diddley and many other greats and is coming to Ketchikan for two shows.  In the intimate setting of the Saxman Tribal House, Hart will play two performances on October 10th, 6pm and 8pm.  You won’t want to miss this!!

In November we have the Second Annual Buoy Ball!  Last year was so much fun we thought we would do it again, complete with dance classes prior to the Ball, fabulous raffle prizes, and dance contest and MORE! November 14th is the date – bring your dance shoes!!

2010 starts with a bang AND the Wearable Art Show on February 4, 5, and 6.  The theme for the 24th Annual Show is “On the Rocks” and promises to be filled with Ketchikan-centric art pieces that will thrill and amaze you (and might make you chuckle)!!  Following the last Wearable show on February 6th join us for another special dance event – the Wearable After Party at the Cape Fox Lodge.  The WAP is a spectacular way to finish off the night with dancing, snacks, a no-host bar and, yes…  the Bizarre Bra Contest!

So, do you like Celtic and Folk music?  How about expert fiddle playing?  And then who can resist the talents of an exceptional step dancer? Well put all those things together and you get our March 20th 2010 performers the April Verch Band.  April Verch will wow your socks off - promise!!!

The Handsome Little Devils in the Squirm Burpee Circus is classic Vaudeville comedy with incredible high-skill circus acts and a plot rooted in American Melodrama. It is a masterful creation with gorgeous hand-crafted props and costumes, death-defying stunts, trick juggling, swing dancing, quick wit and hilarity. A one-of-a-kind cast of gifted performers, incredible jugglers, playwrights, improvisational masters, and talented artists to delight and amaze kids and kids at heart alike. The Circus is April 24th at Kayhi
