November 3 - December 8, 2006 Opening Reception Friday, November 3 from 5 - 7pm.The Alaska Contemporary Art Bank (ACAB) was founded in 1975 by the Alaska State Council on the Arts (ASCA). It was created to address two primary concerns: to expose more Alaskans to high quality work by contemporary Alaskan artists through the provision of outstanding art to public offices throughout the state, and to provide support to professional artists in Alaska through purchase of their work. Through purchases from juried exhibitions, statewide calls for juried competitions, and recommendations for direct purchases by ASCA's statewide public art advisory panel the collection now holds over 600 art works in a wide variety of mediums, styles, and subject matter. This diverse collection now provides a snapshot of the development of Alaskan art from the pipeline days to present day. Thirty-six art works have been selected to highlight the collection and chronicle the development of Alaskan art of the past 30 years in American Masterpieces: Art for Alaskans. Ketchikan is receiving a “mini-version” of the statewide traveling exhibit. This exhibit will not only showcase individual works, but will provide new insights into an entire generation of Alaskan art, unseen by most. The exhibit provides genuinely new insights into the way artists have interpreted our state, its people, and its cultures. Other communities hosting the exhibit include the Fairbanks Arts Association, Kodiak Arts Council, Alaska State Museum in Juneau, Clausen Memorial Museum in Petersburg, Museum of Aleutians in Dutch Harbor, and the Bunnell Street Gallery in Homer. American Masterpieces will be on display in the Mainstay Gallery through December 8 and during the Winter Art Walk on December 1.
This exhibit has great fieldtrip potential. If you would like more information on the exhibit and proposed fieldtrip activities, please contact Lacey Gilbo, Program Director. This exhibit is made possible through the generosity of the Alaska State Council on the Arts, the National Endowment for the Arts - American Masterpieces Program, and the Harper Arts National Touring fund through the Rasmuson Foundation.
