2009-2010 Torch Nights Performing Arts Series
The Ketchikan Area Arts and
Humanities Council is thrilled to announce the line-up of this years Torch Nights Performing Arts Series,
packed with world-class entertainment sure to fill the long dark winter with
some bright stars! This years Season includes not only
world class performances but also 4 special dance events! Our Season opens with one of the special
dances by the Homer based Cajun band Ray-Jen
Cajun. This high energy, all Alaskan
band will be teaching Cajun dancing at the new Arts Council building to build up to their performance on September 12th. (Stay tuned for dance class and times and additional info.) Our next performance, September 26th is Maya Soleil, an electric
ensemble presenting high-energy original music ranging from the Highlife,
Afro-beat, and other dance music styles of western and southern
In October the Arts Council is thrilled to
present blues singer and songwriter AND Grammy Award Winner Alvin Youngblood Hart. He is a dynamic musician who has played with
Taj Mahal, Bo Diddley and many other greats and is coming to
In November we
have the Second Annual Buoy Ball! Last year was so much fun we thought we would
do it again, complete with dance classes prior to the Ball, fabulous raffle
prizes, and dance contest and MORE! November 14th is the date bring your dance shoes!!
2010 starts with a
bang AND the Wearable Art Show on
February 4, 5, and 6. The theme for the
24th Annual Show is On the
Rocks and promises to be filled with Ketchikan-centric art pieces that will
thrill and amaze you (and might make you chuckle)!! Following the last Wearable show on February 6th join us for another special dance event the Wearable After Party at the Cape Fox
Lodge. The WAP is a spectacular way to
finish off the night with dancing, snacks, a no-host bar and, yes
the Bizarre Bra Contest!
So, do you like
Celtic and Folk music? How about expert fiddle
playing? And then who can resist the
talents of an exceptional step dancer? Well put all those things together and you get our March 20th 2010 performers
the April Verch Band. April Verch will wow your socks off -
promise!!!
The
Handsome Little Devils in the Squirm Burpee Circus is classic Vaudeville comedy
with incredible high-skill circus acts and a plot rooted in American Melodrama.
It is a masterful creation with gorgeous hand-crafted props and costumes,
death-defying stunts, trick juggling, swing dancing, quick wit and hilarity. A one-of-a-kind
cast of gifted performers, incredible jugglers, playwrights, improvisational masters,
and talented artists to delight and amaze kids and kids at heart alike. The Circus is April 24th at Kayhi The season ends with the 13th annual Gigglefeet Dance Festival August 6th and 8th. Celebrate the diversity of community dance!
