Sweet and Sour Hearts

The Mainstay Gallery displays “Sweet and Sour Hearts” for the month of January, an invitational show curated by Halli Kenoyer and Rich Stage with a Valentine theme. As February approaches, and with it Valentine’s day, hearts seem to be appearing everywhere…

While school children still carry on the tradition of the red paper heart and lace, not to mention the sweets, Halli and Rich create a show that goes beyond the usual holiday heart. As the title implies, this show of valentines in any media from a variety of artists will explore not only the warm-hearted but the heart-broken. The practice of creating Valentines as adults opens up the potential for looking at both the sweet and the sour sides of love, experiences that may have first begun with the Valentines of our childhood.

“Both Halli and Rich had taken a certain delight in the making and giving of Valentine gifts as children back in their distant youth, both however have continued crafting valentines well into adulthood. Having done this particular activity in Ketchikan, Alaska, we have come upon the certain knowledge that we are not the only island adults with this splendid hobby.”

See Valentines of all kinds created by Ketchikan artists! Join us for a free opening reception for “Sweet and Sour Hearts” on Friday, January 9th, from 5-7pm at the Mainstay Gallery.
