Youth photographers of WeLead of Saxman have used photography as a means of capturing and expressing their cultural traditions, community, and growing relationships between youth and elders. See large-format images of the world through their eyes on display at the Mainstay Gallery for the month of October. This promises to be a wonderful celebration of the final completion of a year of exploration and learning!

Saxman youth, ages seven through young adult, have acquired photography skills as one component of the WeLead program, and have used what they have gained to capture and communicate their world and express their own perspective. These young artists take us through the process of learning to use art as a poignant voice for explaining who they are, what it is to be a kid growing up in Saxman, as well as showing us what they have gained through their interactions with the people and elders of their community. A primary focus of this photography exhibit is building on traditional native values and celebrating cultural knowledge while preserving a way of life through documentation.

A show would provide an opportunity for the youth to share their worlds, experiences, and insightful perspectives. It will give viewers and authentic insight into the lives and community of its artists. These photographers have developed a great sense of pride in their cultural heritage and their own burgeoning artistry.
