September 2008, Hygiene is My Gene PDF Print E-mail

An Exhibit by Virgina Detjen

September 5-26, 2008

Opening Reception 5-7 p.m. on Friday September 5th

The Mainstay Gallery Season begins on September 5 with a photography show by Virginia Detjen: photographs featuring…hygiene?

“I do realize that the subject matter is a little unconventional. Some of the images are unsettling and often disturbing.”

But one wonders… why? There are images of things we do every day - or maybe should do every day! Images include teeth brushing, ear wax, nail clippings, shaving, washing hands, contact lenses, peeling skin, and sunburns. “The list could go on for quite a while, which accentuates one of my main points that we are in an endless process of maintaining our bodies. For the most part I’m trying to tackle the idea of accumulation of what we produce as a living thing over time in respect to how much we consume and own.”

The images themselves are often very close-up, creating a feeling of in-your-face intimacy, while simultaneously making the orifices and digits abstract. Fleshy parts contrast with metal and plastic tools. “Some of the images appear grotesque, some are humorous, and others I feel are beautiful. I would like to leave the viewer with a sense of their own body, how primal and organic we are contrasted to the modern day processes we put ourselves through.”

Hygiene is definitely worth a second look. Join us on Friday, September 5 for a free opening reception at the Mainstay Gallery at 716 Totem Way.  
