Been There, Bought That: art from off the rock, Jan. 2007 PDF Print E-mail

January 5 - 26, 2007

Opening reception Friday, January 5 from 5 - 7pm

Have you ever stared longingly into one of the beautiful and historic hilltop homes of Ketchikan hoping to get a better glimpse of just what lays inside? What is the living room like, what pattern is on the dishes, what art have they collected?

If so, here’s your chance to sneak a looky-loo into some of Ketchikan’s finest and most private art collections. Curators Diane Nabb and Lacey Gilbo had the good fortune to peruse several Ketchikan collections for the January exhibit Been There, Bought That: art from off the rock, which features art and craft collected by Ketchikan residents from other art destinations.

Ketchikan’s great arts tradition stretches back through generations, absorbing the waves of influence perpetually washing ashore. Locals such as Mary Ida Henrikson, Karen Pitcher, Charlotte Glover, and Ray Troll, to name a few, have been avid art collectors in constant quest of new and unique art from where ever their paths lead them. In this exhibit you will find works from the Trobriand Islands off New Guinea, Panama, and further; but, you will also find works from just-down-the-street destinations like Juneau and Washington, complete with back stories. Stop by, have a look, and draw your own conclusions on where our collectors have come from and where they are going.
